Located on Amargura Street, it was built between the 15th and 16th centuries. It is a building with Gothic and Renaissance elements, its main facade follows the typology of palaces from Cáceres, builts in granite ashlars, emphasizes the doorway in arch, with large keystones that reach the ground, the shield of Carvajal in large dimensions, framed by a moulding, and a corner balcony in pointed arch. Inside the house, there is a rectangular cloister with arcades on columns. It also highlights its round tower, of the 12th century, made in masonry, at its base there are some interesting paintings. Its garden, in which highlights the fig tree, it is a clear example of interior green space that can be found today in these buildings of the Monumental City.

Opened in 1997, this is a collection of 27 sculptures that combines two generations of contemporary artists who express themselves in figurative and abstract trends.It is an alternative to the traditional concept of a museum and a commitment to the modernization of the artistic heritage of the city. This initiative was started by the sculptor Pepe Noja, who has also created other similar precedents in Aracena, Huelva and Alcala de Henares. This is a beautiful palace located outside the wall, in a very pleasant square. It occupies the site where the synagogue of the New Jewish Quarter stood, which was converted into the Chapel de la Cruz.The present building was built in the 16th century, in the Renaissance style, with mannerist details such as the bolstered ashlars of its facade and medieval traces such as the Gothic details or the patio. Its owners were the Blazquez-Mogollon, Marquises de la Isla. The Visual Arts Centre is an exhibition space created by the Helga de Alvear Foundation to show Helga de Alvear collection, Spain’s most significant private collection of international contemporary art and one of the most relevant in Europe. In 2010 opened to the public the first phase of Visual Arts Centre. It is the adaptation to museographical space of the building named Big House, a particular house with modernist style that answer to the plan drawn up by the architect Francisco de la Pezuela y Ramírez, ended in 1910. Located on the boundaries of the old part of the historical city, its adaptation was undertook of the renowned Tuñón + Manslla architects’ studio, who will be responsible by the new building that will complete this project. In the Visual Arts Centre were showed to the public in exhibitions of long term the most actual contemporary projects, in curatorial programs with the authory of some more renowned curators of the international context.

This new center is located in the Old Jewish quarter of Caceres and includes a typical house, a garden, veranda and two towers, magnificent example of Almohad fortress, 6 meters high on the Barbican, from there you can enjoy some of the most distinctive and beautiful areas of the city, as Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Montaña, Ribera del Marco, Fuente Concejo, San Marquino … As prelude to the Tower has been restored the garden balcony, about 550 square meters, suitable for the organization of cultural activities or to make a break from his visit to the Monumental City. This notable mark of Palaeolithic art – from between 15,000 and 25,000 years ago – in Extremadura is in the heart of the urban area. It has some thirty groups of motifs that represent seventy human hands in negative (stencilled), surrounded by reddish pigments. Throughout its 130 m length there appear painted hands and black points or strokes and other motifs engraved with a burin.Recent technological studies have shown the existence of numerous engraved representations of animal figures that were previously unknown.An explosion to extract minerals from the limestone quarry in 1951 revealed the cave entrance. Five years later the local historian Carlos Callejo discovered the paintings.The delicate state of conservation of the paintings means that the Cave of Maltravieso is not open to the public. The Centre of Interpretation is within the site, in a workhouse that was rehabilitated to house it. Excavations here have provided a lot of information about the camp. We know its structure, borders, size, etc. The large number of remains that have been found are conserved in the Museum of Caceres, in the archaeology rooms. The excavation process is explained on panels and there is an attempt to recreate the daily life of a Roman soldier, with replicas of the military clothing, offices and rest areas. The building has three floors. On the ground floor the history of this mine is explained, from its beginnings in 1864, centred on the mineral calcium phosphate, until its closure in the 60s. On the first floor there is a grinding and hand selection plant for the mineral obtained from the mine. On the second floor there is a silo of the mineral and a brief history of the mining industry. It’s interesting to visit the mine to recuperate a part of the city’s history, as the development of the mining industry here during nearly a century was a decisive influence both on the economic and on the urban and social aspects of the city.
